While doing research trying to look for a healthy food, I purchased Royal Canin, it's not at the top of the list, and it's not on the bottom, but pretty much in the middle, and I've never been convinced that the people writing the lists know what there talking about. There are lots of people who use it without any problems, and while switching around foods trying to find a healthier alternative, Joey became very fussy, and had lots of problems. He loves the RC, and doesn't ever have any gas problems, diarrhea problems, tummy upsets and vomiting. While it not rated really high, Joey's does well on it. I not really recommending it, it's just that I think it's unfair to label it "unhealthy."
If it's new puppy I wouldn't change a thing the first few weeks, any problems he has you will know it's something else and not associated with the food. After you have had him a month, you could experiment with different foods, but add them slowly to avoid tummy upsets.
The common problem associated with being allergic to corn seems to be excessive itching, and if this happens, you should try to find a product with no corn. I emphasized excessive because it's ok for them to scratch themselves from time to time. |
I agree with this. I know the vet I use also has done a lot of research on dog food ingredients, she found a lot of dogs are not necessarily allergic to the corn, but, to some of the meats they use.
I had actually thought about using rc as mom had her dogs on it at one time, and her shih tzus hair looked better than it ever had while she was using it, and her dogs actually had quit licking themselves. The only reason she took them off of it, was because she was buying it from her groomer and the groomer moved to SC, so she wasn't close enough to drive to buy it, and wasn't going to pay high s&h to have it delievered. Now, recently at our pet store, I did inquire about it, the guy said it was bought out by one of the other food companies(can't remember if it was diamond or what, but, I do recall it wasn't a very good company that bought them out)
