I bought my yorkie online through petfinder. but I went and picked him up over in Ohio
(I'm in Michigan). I've thought about buying one online and having him/her shipped, but I don't know if I could personally buy a dog without seeing how our personalities react to each other. I don't see a problem with it though if you're comfortable with it.
