This is not how I pictured my "golden years"
Maybe your "golden shower" years! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Thor still isn't potty trained, but what I believe the turning point for me was to crate him, and then put him on a pee pad every few hours. If he didn't potty, he went back in the crate. When he finally started pottying, he got an incredible treat (right now, a teaspoon of ice cream).

It seems to be working pretty well. I put him on his pad every few hours, tell him to potty, and he goes. As long as he's on empty, I'm giving him run of the living room and front hallway.

It sounds like you are training them to go outside, but I thought maybe my story would trigger an idea for you.

Also, Thor goes to the park almost every day, and being so small, he comes home filthy. While a normal sized dog might have dirty paws, pretty much everything under his armpits is covered in dirt. I've started giving him a mini-bath every day. I fill the sink with warm water, dunk him in it for a minute, and then let him loose. He doesn't mind at all, and he's at least clean enough that he's not going to leave a trail when he walks.
