Hi I am new here but I found with training is it is easier if they are kept in a small area where they have their bed. Not too much space away from their bed to walk around. Most dogs wont mess in their sleeping area.
Take them out every 20 to 30 mins to go and say go go or potty whatever you like. If they go out where they are supposed to give them a very small treat and praise.Let them stay out of their pen for some play time but only when you are there to watch them. When you cant watch them they have to go back in their pen.
Anyway hope this helps you. It worked for me when had a Papillon pup some time ago
