My girls have free run of the whole house as long as someone is home. My girls have the whole first floor and upstairs hallway(bedroom doors are closed) when we are not. They are pretty much trained. I still have a couple of potty pads down for the younger ones that are not fully trained yet and food & water, of course beds & toys everywhere so they have plenty room and things to keep them busy.

I think you will know when you can loosen up the reins a little. Make it gradual. I've never been a crate fan...when I had 1, I baby gated her in the kitchen area with pads, bed, toys & food/water, and that worked well for me.

I think you're doing fine with gating in a small area for now..once you feel he is trained enough, you can try to see how he does one day to see if he's ready for more room.

Good Luck
