I use the litterbox with a washable pad in it. The nice thing about the litterbox, it teaches them they have to get into it to use it. Different from just a pad on the floor, which could be mistaken for carpet

I started AprilLove in the litterboix from the first day home and the two younger ones also, now they all use it, and in addition to a pet potty.
