The problem with all these new and improved ways of communication, it's hard to tell frame of reference when someone is typing via text message/email/etc. It can be completely misinterpreted, and seem like someone is criticizing when they are just trying to help. I think this may have happened in this case.
The problem with not hearing the tone of the person is, the person receiving the message can interpret it however they want, and it might not be the way it was intended. For some reason, this guy really upset you, and struck something that hit a nerve. I don't think he meant to upset you at all, but just wanted to voice his concern (whether you accepted it or not). I have to praise him for this because it's important that we protect the lives of all the little animals in the world
