if you are getting a puppy I think its def. worthwhile to go with insurance. a lot of plans cover vaccinations, heartworm testings, flea control preventative, spay/neuter, etc. to get you started. but make sure you find a good ins. company though!
we do have VPI as well but Im thinking about switching. my neighbor's had some real bad experience with them, it took them forever to respond, and when they respond they would request information from the vet over and over to make sure its not pre-existing condition, after the vet has assured them it was something that happened suddenly, they still didn't want to pay. then my neighbor filed a claim with state insurance commission and right after that she got reimbursed. a week later, my neighbor has received a letter from VPI stating that her dog was dropped from the plan due to misrepresentation at enrollment!!!
