Ticks are honestly a bigger risk than the chemicals when you take into account all the terrible diseases that they can carry to both dogs AND humans-- I wouldn't risk lyme disease or Ehrlichiosis if you're in a tick-heavy area, even if it means exposing the furkids to some chemicals. Frontline does a pretty good job with ticks, and I'd definitely recommend that over the tick collars out there-- the collars can be really nasty and sometimes cause severe side effects in dogs. Some of the other flea+tick formulas out there can be dangerous to animals, especially some of the over the counter things. You have to be especially careful if you have cats in your household as well as dogs-- some of the meds out there that are labeled for dogs can be deadly to a cat if they even snuggle up against the dog.

I'm so glad that I'm living in a little tick-free pocket now. Fleas are a lot easier to protect against using less potent meds, but ticks are nasty things. >.<
