Really? Mine is particularly ornery- I think she wants so much to frustrate me!! lol
I do think they can tell, when I am sad mine will lay done and put her head on her paws and look around like she knows something is wrong. As soon as I call her over she starts licking and trying to play, and like you it almost instantly cheers me up.
