Ugh...how never wracking. Taking on helping a bitch whelp a litter when you've had no prior experience is never an ideal situation. You should have an x-ray performed about 10 days prior to her due date. This will give you a guessimate as to how many puppies to expect, but more importantly, will give you and your vet an heads up if it looks like the puppies are large and a c-section may be needed. It's best to be able to plan for a possible c-section than to rush to have an emergency procedure done with your female in distress.
