Most people who buy dogs aren't planning to breed or show, I still recommend registering the dogs; it helps keep breeders honest, and help support the work the AKC is doing in shutting down puppy mills. The AKC has a publicized list of suspended breeders, and these breeders have to go somewhere, so the alternative registries have shown up. Jennzy is correct; there is a reputable Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and a shady American club, called the Continental Kennel Club (CKC). I believe they took these initials to mislead the uneducated buyer, and they definitely have misled many people. They will register anything, and in my opinion the registry worthless because:

Quote:
CKC will recognize a cross between any two purebred dogs, and will issue a registration certificate on their offspring. These crosses are not registered as purebred dogs but are registered as the offspring of purebred dogs. CKC accepts no responsibility for any inaccurate, false, or fraudulent information submitted on registration applications. They sponsor no shows or championships. They also give big fee breaks to large kennels registering lots of dogs (such as Puppy Mills). Will register dogs not registered with other recognized registries. Registries
The AKC has a long way to go in getting rid of bad breeders, but the more people who register their dogs, the more money they have to do such things as inspecting kennels.
