AKC registered puppies are the only puppies I will buy. AKC is an extremely reputable registry. Most of the dogs you buy that are AKC registered will come from lines that are healthy and to standard (the dogs will look like Yorkies and be the proper size). This obviously is not the case because illness and genetic differences are uncontrollable. However, other registries pretty much allow any dog to register. There is no guarantee that you dog is a pure-breed dog and not a mix.
AKC breeders also have to follow a certain code of ethics. They also do routine inspections of kennels and breeders. If these codes are violated and reported, AKC can inspect the breeder and then take the proper disciplinary actions (i.e. suspension)
Of course if you're just looking to buy a pet, it doesn't really matter.. as long as you are aware of the facts. From my research, the only breeders I would buy from also happen to be AKC registered.
