Sorry, didn't mean any offense-- designer pups are just one of the big warning signs when taken in conjunction with other warning signs-- like having tons of dogs, multiple breeds, being located in puppy mill states...
The advice to look for somewhere within driving distance is probably the best you can get. That way you can actually go there and inspect the place yourself. As a warning, some of the shady people will offer to meet you halfway at a parking lot-- I would never, ever buy a dog from somebody who was not willing to let me pick them up directly from their home.
