I just wanted to add to the facts b/c I've had many an incidents with kids around Gucci and he's never ever snapped at any of them. As a matter of fact I keep kids away from him b/c when Gucci was about a year old a child kicked him so hard I swear I wanted to kick that child right back and worst the father who did absolutely nothing.
Then there was this other kid who's mother insisted I let him pet my dog only to grab my dog's fur and yank at it. All my poor Gucci did was cry. THAT child too I wanted to slap across the face.
I can go on and on about these cases and so after lesson much learnt and my poor Gucci now being petrified of these small people, I keep them away from him unless it's a "trusted" child.
Also, Gucci doesn't like for other dogs to play with him or come near him and thus i do not bring him to anyone's home who have dogs of their own. |
Your poor Gucci sounds like what Chip has been through! When we picked him up from the broker (yes he was a puppy mill dog), they had two SCREAMING little kids... I'm not even talking normal screaming... like loud, obnoxious screaming. He was petrified of everyone! Then as he got older we would take him places to try and get him to socialize and one time at Petsmart a group of like 6 kids came up, cornered him around the guinea pig cages and started pulling at his hair. He was not happy. I picked him up so fast and told those kdis a thing or two. Then another time some kid came up and asked nicely to pet my dogs. I said that he could pet Smokey, but not Chip, because after all Chip had been through with kids, he's not a big fan of them. As I was trying to hold Smokey still (this kid was like 4 and I have no idea where his mother was), he was literally chasing Chip around me. Chip wanted to be left alone so he was trying to get away from this kid. I kept saying, "no don't do that, pet this dog, no don't do that, pet this dog" over and over again and he wouldn't listen. Finally Chip turned around and showed his teeth cause he had enough. He wasn't going to bite or anything, I think that was just his way of trying to scare the kid. The kid then turned around and pet Smokey. Then his mom happened to walk by and said "That dog is MEAN!" He's not mean, you were just provoking him you little brat. Chip does good with kids if they are calm. He just doesn't like it when they are excited and jumping, running, screaming, etc. He likes to be able to come to them and they have to earn his trust.
