CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW FAMILY!!!!! I can't wait to see pics You have been given some great advice - I'll add a bit more.....

The whelping pudding is a supplemental food to supply extra calcuim and energy. The pudding recipe listed is great, I have "customized" my version of the recipe:

1 can goat's milk + 1 can hot water
1/2 cup kayro syrup
1 small carton of live active culture plain yogurt - NOT FAT/SUGAR FREE - the real stuff
2 egg yolks
4 envelopes Knox plain gelatin

dissolve gelatin in hot water let cool a bit, add remaining ingredients stir well and pour in a square dish (I use a tupperware bacon keeper). Slice into squares when cool and feed.

Tums are fine sources of calcium but you might not need them if you are feeding the whelping pudding. Dr. Amy always cautions me against using calcium supplements such as CalSorb unless they are absolutely necessary because these supplements prevents the mother from utilizing the calcium from her bones to help in milk production.

You DO want to be familar with the signs of hypocalcemia - here is a link to a site that explains Eclampsia (Puerperal Tetany, Milk Fever, Hypocalcemia) in Dogs
