I think it depends more on the dog's temperament and sex more than age. In general puppies adjust quicker than older dogs. But older dogs can adjust also. I have a 7 yr old female brought home a 6 month old male the first 2 or 3 days my female wanted nothing to do with the puppy, but by the end of the week and ever since they have adjusted well. The puppy of course was ready from day one to bond. It will help to introduce them on neutral territory and if you are going to a breeder, take a blanket with the other dog and your scent on it to the breeder leave it in the puppy's crate or bed; and bring another blanket home with the puppy and your scent on it leave it in your dog's crate or bed. I believe that went a long way in helping prepare my two yorkies for each other. Also opposite sex tend to adjust better than two of the same sex.
