I can only answer the first question as I do not put Pao in the crate and he hates it as well..

Pao always follows me around the house..anywhere and everywhere. I think it is normal for Yorkies, they usually like to be with someone. Maybe in your case, he is adjusting to a new environment and being near you makes him feel safer. Mine has separation anxiety though..actually I am not sure if he has separation anxiety or he is barking out of protest just before we leave because he stops as soon as we have left so now 15 mins before we leave, we try not to talk, touch or have eye contact with him.

Edited to add: Just a suggestion, if space permits maybe use a playpen instead of a crate and leave a peepad in there?
