I just came in from my backyard with Toby. I can't believe I'm reading this thread. I was standing in the back corner of our 1/2 acre in the middle of town in Connecticut. I heard what I thought was a a coyote howling and then some smaller dogs barking and then some not so great noises. I hope everything is okay, but it didn't sound like it was. It's 10:30 here. There is a big empty field behind my house, and the howling was coming from across the field. I know of people who have let their dogs out and they have never come back.
