I am so sorry to hear this, and glad you took him to the vet promptly.

I'm only guessing here, but wondering if he could have chewed up something glass (a piece of broken ornament, or something like that) or bone; thinking that the granular stuff may be bits of sharp stuff making his stomach bleed.

Did they give anything to coat his stomach or to help him pass whatever is in there? Oh, and did they do a stool sample for additional clues?
