| Holly's Beat Parvo, Now we're Hypoglycemic with an enlarged esophagus... Ok, I've been through hell today, so try to hang in there with me. My puppy, Lilly, died a week to the day we got her in December. Then we got Holly (my birthday gift) at Christmas. She was fine and dandy until a week later on my actual birthday, she started getting ill. Turned out to be Parvo. They were SHOCKED she survived. Stunned actually.
Two nights ago, she was drinking her body-weight in water, her stools were getting solid, and she was eating a/d food off my finger. She'd been having issues with swallowing though. She'll plant her bottom, slide it back so she's hunched over, and try to hack, like she has something in her throat. The Doctor said she may have a sore throat, or it could be an enlarged esophagus, so she gave me Amoxicillin, and another med for her throat. I gave them to her as directed yesterday afternoon, then she became really limp, like a rag doll. She was still alert, so we thought the meds were taking a lot out of her. She didn't eat or drink yesterday.
This morning I got up at 7:45 and found her on her heating pad, out of it. She wouldn't respond at all, so I picked her up and her head flopped around, her eyes were back in her head, she was barley breathing, it was BAD. I called the vet and left a message, and they called right back when they opened at 8 and I brought her in. Her temp was 97.9 when it should've been 101, her blood sugar was 26 when it shouldve been around 140! The doctor was about ready to pronounce her, because she was comatose, and almost gone. We gave her fluids, kept her warm, put sugar water on her gums, and just ruffed her up all morning, and she began to wake up, little by little. They also shot food directly into her stomach with a tube, she most likely has an enlarged esophagus si the food's not getting to her tummy. They also tested her poo, and she had a great white blood cell count, no blood, negative for Parvo (yayyyy!!!).
After 7 hours, they tested her blood sugar again, and it was 400!! Her legs won't stop going like she was trying to run, and when we put her on the floor, she walked in big circles bumping her head. They then sent us home with food saying to feed her wattered down food every 4 hours while holding her up so the food can go down her throat, keep her warm, and try to keep her down, but if we can't watch her, but let her walk off some of the sugar. She's now walking in circles in the kitchen, hitting her head on everything, but when she does, she just stands there, like she wants to walk through the dishwasher....
How long will it be before her blood sugar is back to normal, and she's not acting so loopy anymore??? This is scary....it's like she's not here. She's in her own world.... I hold her to get her to rest, but she just fights me, kicking all feet and trying to get away... |
