I'm so sorry you are going through this. It must be heartbreaking for you. I know from experience what a little paint, and cleaning can do.Once you put your own touches on it, it may not be so bad. Also, keep reminding yourself it is only a temporary move.
If you really don't think it would work there, I would just tell your friend that you have found something else in the meantime.
