One thing is that it could be too long btwn meals for him, causing excess bile that upsets the tummy a bit - then he eats, and he has a whole big pile in his tummy now making him nauseous. You might want to try feeding more frequently and see if that helps at all. Or, try feeding a little treat an hour before meal time. Still though, any time a dog vomits like you're describing, it's good to get it checked by a vet.
