We took Joey to the tricks training class at Petsmart, he was 8 months old, and too old for the puppy class, but I wanted it mainly for socialization purposes. I really enjoyed the class, and learned how to teach him many different tricks. Remember they don't teach the tricks or obedience, they teach you how to teach it. I don't think a personal trainer coming to the house is necessary unless you have some sort of problem. Most of the things we learned we could have learned elsewhere, but it was good for him to be around other dogs. This site is great for learning tricks.
Dog Tricks! Shake, Crawl, Beg, Kiss, Roll Over, Bow, and more!. I personally believe the more they obey you with any training the more obedient they become. Puppy class might be good for you especially if you can find one that has mostly small dogs. A large puppy can be more dangerous to your dog, then a large adult, they are just so awkward and can trample a small dog so easily.
