Default curious behavior

My year old Yorkie Jonah has a strange habit and I am wondering if anyone can shed any light on his reason for doing this. Firstly, let me tell you Jonah under normal circumstances eats anything and everything and his meals are scoffed down in record time. That said, when I need to leave the house I put him in his kennel and give him a treat. He does not touch the treat. It does not matter how long I am gone he will not eat the treat. When I arrive home and let him out of his kennel he grabs the treat and eats it! Why does he save it until I get home?
