just because a dog isnt a purebred, does not mean it will automatically be unhealthy, but if you buy from a reputable breeder and the puppies are registered with the CKC (canadian equivilant of AKC) than there is a better chance of having healthy puppies from a breeder that knows about the breed and cares for the parents and puppies to the best of their abilities.

a vet will not be able to tell if the dog is a purebred. there is no test that can be administered to finds that out. the only way to know for sure is to have papers to prove it. the "breeder" is the only person that will be able to get you that information. find out if the parents are registered with the CKC and if you can see the papers. it would be up to your parents if they wanted to get the puppy registered also.

i am not sure about the pricing in the east, but in ontario, you would not be able to find a registered pup for $800. purbred dogs go for anywhere from $1200 - $2000+ for a purebred puppy, fully registered without breeding rights.

if this is just a person that happened to have puppies, it probably isnt likely that the parents are registered, but it wouldnt hurt to ask.
