  Oh, a few months would be fine. It's the people that wait for years who find out that the joints have really deteriorated and the surgery is much more expensive or can't be done at all. 
I'd get a second opinion from an orthopedic vet. If the other one is between a 2-3, he may recommend getting them both done at once.
