She will be fine, I promise. I know this isn't an ideal situation, but Sophie will bounce back and be just fine. I had a little mutt when I was younger that had to stay outside (parents' rules). Another dog came along during the night and fought him, causing his eye to pop out. I didn't find out what had happened, of course, until the next morning. By then, the eye was filthy and tangled up in his facial hair. Rascal lost his eye and had the socket sewn shut. He had a lot of hair like Yorkies do, and to be honest, you didn't notice the difference unless you studied him. He bounced right back to his old self. Dogs have amazing capabilities to cope.
Your little girl will recover from this (as will you). Just give her extra love (out of the Sheltie's view, of course) while she adjusts.
