Gas stations used to have "price wars" back in those days, and it wasn't unusual to see gas for $.15 a gallon. With my car, I could drive 400 miles for about $3. Of course, back in those days I made about $1 an hour - so that was over 3 hours' work (after deducting for taxes). Today, driving an SUV around town a bit over two hours' work will get me 400 miles. I guess price per gallon isn't the whole story.
My first car was a 1964 Comet I drove it till 1982. I remember everyone getting armed for battle when it was rumored gas was going to $1.00 a gallon. It didn't, guess they cared what the consumer thought back then. I paid $1.63 today and was thrilled!!!!
