That's so sad about your co-worker's home. Everyone got out of the house okay, right?

The animal rescue site has decals for your house windows (instead of "child bedroom", they say "pets inside", I think). Having some of those might make you feel a little better. You could also have your home monitored by one of the alarm companies, at least then, if you're not home, the fire dept. would be notified.

I use to worry about things like fire, tornadoes, burglars, etc. And, although I'm still concerned I do try to keep things in perspective. I think most live their lives out and have none of these things happen to them. Be prepared but do not let worry consume your life.

ETA: Sorry, didn't see your post above recommending the decals too.
