Yes...someone who is too rough or does not know what they feeling for...could injure or kill a fetus.
As far as doing it often? What would be the reason for doing it often? Only someone who does not know what they are feeling for would need to do it often.
Assuming one knows what they are doing...gently palpating a bitch once at 28 days should be enough to determine if the bitch is pregnant.
I personally can usually tell if a bitch is pregnant by 21 days. And by 28 days...most of the time...especially if it's a small litter...I can actually count the # of pups.
As my mentor once told me...it's a gift.
