That make sense. The point of getting another dog is for her to have a playmate while I am at work. I won't leave them together unsupervised until I am sure they are fine together regardless the size or breed or even personality of course. But just how big is too big? My baby is 6.5 pounds
But even if you are "sure" that they will be fine (and they might) accidents happen. For example, I have known some people with a Standard poodle who got along great with their Shih Tzu. And while they were home, mind you, when the standard was going for a toy ... the Shih Tzu ran in the way and got her eye poked out. I've heard of another story, from my friend... her jack russel killed another shih tzu by accident... by stepping on her. Even though they were only playing. So, my point is be very careful.
If you are getting a puppy, I would try to aim for the 4-8 lb range. 10 at the largest because of puppy exhuberance.
i have 2 12 lbers and a 4 lber and a 6lber... I leave them with the 12lbers...but they are 6&7 (the bigger ones) years old...they are extremely mellow...and I've known them longer. I wouldn't go bigger than 15lbs though. If the 12 lbers were a puppy (small going to get 12lbs)---I wouldn't do it because of the strength and lack of inhibition.
