I did the same thing re: the dog I bought for my mother-in-law. I bought her a female chocolate Lab and had her shipped to Idaho. Since she was tiny at 12 weeks old (only 14 lbs), she was able to fly in the plane and the stewardesses all attended to her and dotted on her. So this is the way I would go if I ever had to ship an animal (although, I prefer NOT to ship if at all possible).
