Each puppy will go through developmental stages where the brain is completing some of the unfinished business of hard wiring. One of the stages is the Startle/Recovery reflex. If your girl was not exposed to men during her development, or if she associates the man with something that excites her, she may bark and become excited.

If you only had a shadow on the wall to determine whether the person was male or female and the subject is walking you can tell right away which it is. Men walk and move differently than women (Thank Goodness) this can be unsettling for some dogs, especially if they haven't had contact with men. Add to that the deeper voice and more forceful cadence of speech and the puppy suddenly feels threatened.

We have all heard someone say that the rescue animal they have must have been mistreated because of the way they react to men, people in uniform, etc... But in all likelihood the reaction is the result of isolation and neglect more than abuse. Temperament is hard wired, genetic, so some tendencies will be past on from the parents. If the puppy inherits a good temperament she is more likely to be well adjusted and of course the opposite is true as well.
Good post!!! Gracie is 11 months old... she loves her daddy!!! but I think that its that she gets REALLY EXCITED... because she is ALWAYS excited when her daddy comes home from work!!! and my hubbies brother lives with us and shes always excted when he comes home... she likes men... but she just barks at the new men that come around...
