I think it's appropriate but I wasn't sure, so I asked my mom what she thought. She also thinks that it's appropriate for a 9 year old.
It does go into some dark things (such as a beating that one of the African American women gets). It isn't a movie FOR kids, but I think it would be a great learning experience for a kid. There are probably some clips online and they may give you a better preview to what the movie displays if you want to be sure.
If you don't mind spoilers, I can PM you some more information about the movie and the kinds of things that are seen in it (I just don't want to post it here as some people may not want to know going into it).
