doctors may prescribe antibiotic prophylaxis to prevent infection. when the eye is very dry, even blinking can result in a small corneal abrasion, which increases risk of infection. an even more compelling reason to have antibiotics is that tearing helps rid the eye of irritants and pathogens. Thus severe dry eye reduces the ability of the eye to fight infection.
