Personaly i dont think there is any substitution for good training. Our Poppy is only 6 months old, we have had her from 5 weeks and she stopped doing number 1's and number 2's in the house about 2 months (or maybe even 3) ago.
Molly and poppy never wee in the house, we trained them with the treat method. at first you have to anticipate them wanting to do a number 1 or 2, a last resort sign is when they become restless or pace back and forth sniffing about, let them out now or be ready with the kitchen towel and carpet cleaning solution lol
Watch them in the garden, if they do nothing then so do you but if they do a wee or a number 2 then make an incredible fuss of them and give them a treat quickly so they know they are getting a treat for weeing outside.
at first it seems the message doesnt sink in but hold firm and most importantly.... dont treat them if they go in the garden but dont wee or number 2. they will quickly learn that doing their business in the garden leads to a treat and before long they will be coming to you and asking to go outside
Our pair of sneakers would always ensure we where watching them before they would wee so they would be sure to get a treat, they got to the point where they wouldnt wee in the house at all as that is depriving them of a treat lol
Molly our oldest will often put her back end down in the yard and pretend to wee then come for her "good girl treat" .... it's so funny you have to give her a treat just for the sheer sneakiness of it lol
Sometimes poppy will do a wee around the corner in the yard (our back yard is a small "L" shaped yard thats all cement and paving flags) but someone lets her in and doesnt check if she did anything, when this happens she will mither either me or the wife to follow her then she will run to her wee or number 2 in the yard and dance around it till we see it and give her a treat
sometimes she even tries to get two treats (one from me and one from the wife) at different times for the same wee or even for one of molly's wee's
who say's dogs are not clever !!
Ultimatly i will trust our girls anywhere and even in someone elses house
