I think they do outgrow this behavior, but I also believe in training them. I especially like to use Pennies in a can for bad behavior. It's just aversive enough to get their attention, but not so harmful that they become afraid of you. Just fill a tin can half way with pennies. Shake the can and say "no" for unwanted behavior. Repeat as necessary. Some dogs, like children, will test you more, and see if they can make you give up, but you have to hold out one more time than them.
