Good questions. I had the same ones. First, after examining him, he thinks he can do the procedure in one part. And he's not going to use mesh. I'm not exactly sure where he's going to go in, but your description sounds logical.
The two-part procedure (which he's hoping to avoid) would be to go in and suture the affected organs in place. Two weeks later, he would go back in and repair the hernia. But with Jack, he thinks all he's going to have to do is repair the hernia. He'll use muscle to close the opening.
That's my layman's understanding anyway. He is a board-certified surgeon who several vets I've spoken to have raved about, so I'm pretty comfortable that he's the best to do the job.
