I love my dogs more than I like most people but there comes a point when you have to consider your own personal wellbeing. I, like these fine people, don't have a lot of money either. $7,000 would be well beyond what I could afford in vet fees.
The way I read it is that the $7,000 was for the surgery, if the OP wanted to keep Spanky. However, the vet said he could relinquish ownership and give Spanky to a rescue group, but there was an undisclosed "outrageous fee" for an overnight stay. This amount is what some of us think should have paid. When you have a pet, you need to budget for overnight emergencies stays. I think the OP thought. "I have to pay "XXX" for an overnight stay, and somebody else gets him, no fair." I am suggesting that this is what real love is about. We make sacrifices even though we are not the ones that are benefited by those sacrifices.
