Sounds like it could very well be his anal glands.

Although I had a situation like you're describing with my Charmer.....so, off we went to the vet's....he ran a CBC on him and found that he'd been bitten by a spider. Gave him a shot to counter react the poison in his system and put him on antibiotics.....
