I never cut any of my dogs puppy coat. The adult coat will come in while the puppy coat sheds out and when all the puppy coat is gone the adult coat will lay nicely without any cutting. Just use a really good cream conditioner to help cut down on the mats, and brush the coat at least once a day. When mine had their puppy coat I brushed them two and three times a day.
