| Does the puppy hair have to be cut off? Wrigley is a little over 4 months old and he hasn't had his hair cut at all yet. He is starting to look a little poofy like and he looks like he weighs like 3lbs more than he does (he is a bigger one coming in at 5.1 already but he looks like he's 7-8lbs!). I want his hair to eventually be long, not super long, but long enough that it lays down and he has the part on his back. So my question is, does his puppy hair have to be shaved off before his other hair will start coming in? I'm not sure if that makes sense or not. Also I bought a small kit from Petsmart, because I want to groom him myself. It came with a few attachments, but the longest setting is 1/2 inch. Do you know if they make attachments that are longer than that? Wouldn't 1/2 inch be almost like shaving him down? I don't want to shave him, but I do want him to have some of that "poofy" looking hair gone while he still has that puppy hair. I'm right in saying that right? They have puppy hair and adult hair right? |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | No you don't have to cut his hair. His adult coat will start coming in itself...sometimes you'll see this at around 6 months...sometimes later. His hair will begin to part along his spine. Be sure to brush him regularly....puppy coats tend to mat easily. And yes a 1/2" clipper attachment means...it leaves a 1/2" long hair. My clippers came with a lot of different size attachments...perhaps you could just find an accessory kit of attachments.

| Thankfully his hair brushes very nicely and hardly has any snags in it... he doesn't let me brush him for very long unless he is sleepy. We are still working on that Good to know that I don't have to cut his puppy hair off. I didn't know if it would get in the way and delay growth at all. I'll have to look to see if I can find some attachments for the clippers that are longer than 1/2 inch. His hair is probably a good 2 inches right now. He just looks sooooo bulky with all of that hair since it is poofy like right now. |

| I never cut any of my dogs puppy coat. The adult coat will come in while the puppy coat sheds out and when all the puppy coat is gone the adult coat will lay nicely without any cutting. Just use a really good cream conditioner to help cut down on the mats, and brush the coat at least once a day. When mine had their puppy coat I brushed them two and three times a day.
