No you don't have to cut his hair. His adult coat will start coming in itself...sometimes you'll see this at around 6 months...sometimes later. His hair will begin to part along his spine. Be sure to brush him regularly....puppy coats tend to mat easily.

And yes a 1/2" clipper attachment means...it leaves a 1/2" long hair.

My clippers came with a lot of different size attachments...perhaps you could just find an accessory kit of attachments.
