Default Itching, rashes, food allergies....

Just went through a terrible allergic reaction that I wanted to tell you about.

First, Kasey (3 yrs) had a gastro illness that caused severe vomiting and diarrhea, so much so that we had to go to the emergency vet over Labor Day weekend. He gave her the equivalent of pepsid pills for acid, re-hydrated her with an IV, and suggested either boiled chicken or boiled hamburger and rice.

Kasey didn't seem interested in the chicken but she downed the hamburger. She'd never had that before, and seemed to love it.

Within 24 hours she began itching with great intensity, all over. Stayed up all night. Poor baby! Her skin looked like it was sunburned -- it was bright red. We took her off of the hamburger and stopped the pills, and the itching stopped right away -- and the redness went away over three days.

Vet said she's likely allergic to hamburger. She's always been prone to itchiness, but now that I'm vigilantly checking to be sure there's no meat in her diet, she seems less itchy. I'll try introducing it once more later on to see for sure if that's what it is. (Doc said that it's unlikely the Pepsid caused it.)

Also, as for dog food brands, I found this site really helpful. Made me realize that the foods made "just for Yorkies" might not be the best for ours. Kasey eats Artemis, which gets great ratings.

I found this link on Yorkietalk.

Hope my story helps someone out there!
