Luckily for me, we have no family on our same continent. My parents, however, cannot fathom the possibility of having any kind of pet in the city. Mind you, they have 5 Weimaraners at their farm but they only see them when they're in countryside mood (most weekends). When I told my dad I was getting a yorkie puppy, and he was going to live with us in the flat he was horrified and made some negative arguments...although he was never attacking the puppy or being insulting. All I could say was "well dad, its a good thing he is going to be my puppy and not yours."
I love my puppy to bits, but I can totally accept the fact that there are some who think tiny babies are awkward and unappealing... or those who just hate dogs. I wouldn't waste any time or effort trying to get back and show how offended I am... surely, your puppy doesn't get it/ doesn't care, so why bother?
If your FIL thinks they're ugly just say "great, everything is entitled to their opinion." If he starts pushing you/ partner to get rid of them or hitting them then that is a completely different issue.
