My jerk of a father-in-law makes rude comments about my dogs everytime he comes over. He pets them, talks to them and then will tell me..."These are the ugliest dogs I've ever seen". I know that he only says it to get under my skin and I've learned to not let my anger show...since that is what he is striving for.

He owns 3 bird dogs...that are kept outside 24/7 and only let out of their 1/2 acre pen when he takes them hunting. One is being treated for heartworms as I speak. They are given ZERO attention and their only human contact is when they are fed in the evenings.

Anyway, so what do YOU say when someone is being ugly?

If they are working dogs as in what they are bird dogs....then hunters do not give a lot of attention. Its sad, but its true. They have some weird ideas that will make them a pet and not hunt.
Maybe he wants you to talk to him and he thinks this is the way to get you to.
What I would say to him would be have you looked in the mirror lately? Or you could just tell your husband that it hurts your feelings and ask him to pull his dad to the side and talk with him. I would go with talking with your husband and see if that would work.
