I think I would do just the opposite. I would want to keep it covered at night because it would hurt when something rubs against it and if he lays on that side while he is sleeping, it might get ftuck to the pillowcase or something.
The best thing you can do right now is to keep an antibiotic slave on it but make sure it doesn't get in his eye. It is so close!

I was always told that vaseline put on a scar every day will help to minimize it. This was from a nurse after my daughter's facial surgery.
I hope he heals quickly. I feel so badly for him. He is a cutie! A sad looking one, but a cutie nonetheless.
