  A level of protein I wouldn't want to get below if there isn't a good reason is maybe 18%.  Dogs can do well on a 21-22% protein diet but it really shouldn't be restricted to 15 or 16% unless there is a very good reason (like neurologic symptoms) in my opinion. 
A Protein C test is a blood test sent to Cornell.
Some people like it and others don't.
Dr. Center who developed the bile acid test would probably say a Protein C test then a Scintography if indicated.
