I think the Pennies in the can works great to stop barking, it's not aversive enough to cause discomfort or pain, it's just annoying, and they don't particularly like it. Say the word, No followed by a shake of the can. It also helps to raise your index finger over your lips, and say shhhh, they are much more observant to hand signals than words. Joey is to the point where I can just put my finger over my lips and don't need to say anything. This is especially good when he's out in the yard, away from me, and he starts barking at a passerby. I can just raise my finger now, and he stops. The first time it worked I was actually amazed; it's so cool. This still doesn't work for doorbell yet, but I'm working on it.

Good luck with the visit!
I tried telling her no, and she gives me a look and starts barking worse. (Miss Smarty Pants she is) I will try the finger to my lips.
Right now when she barks I turn around or leave the room when she barks and when she stops for a bit I go in. My boyfriends dogs learned relax which as helpful for barking and running wild But with Suri any attention such as no, pennies seems to make her bark more like it is a game. I guess the ignoring bad behavior is the only one that's working, but I'll try what you said.
